Rest in peace Bill. He had an incredible impact on the lives of so many people. My own career got off the ground with, strange to say, his brainchild Hypercard. I really don't know where I'd be if he hadn't given this gift to the world. Scott, I like your comparison of the General Magic folk to the Beatles. Amazing creativity in both. The Beatles of course were infinitely more recognized, but I wonder which had a longer impact on the culture in the long run?

Bill caught me working late at my desk one night and invited me to help him debug the smoothing routines on the new LaserWriter he was working on. I was little more than an area associate (secretary) but he didn’t care. In fact I think he appreciated it. He would generate page after page and I would tell him if this or that worked, kind of like an eye test. After an all-nighter testing, joking, talking about life, we became friends, so much so that when he returned after hiatus having written HyperCard I was one of the first people he showed it to - and gave it to! I last saw him at a user group meeting in Palo Alto. Can you imagine that? Bill Atkinson at a user group meeting? Like Michelangelo sitting in at art school.
